Anyone fancy going along with a Big Sign saying: "BY-NC-SA isn't really
'open'!" ;-)

Creative Commons is launching *The Power of Open*, a book that highlights
the role of copyright, content sharing and collaboration in driving
innovation in the digital age. Copyright was created long before the
emergence of the Internet, and can make it hard for Internet users to
legally share content, and for content owners to protect their intellectual
property on the Web.****

Creative Commons is the non-profit organisation behind a copyright framework
and global standard for licensing that meets the needs of individual
creators, companies and Internet users. It makes creative, educational and
scientific content more accessible and usable on the Internet, helping to
unlock the creative power of today’s connected world.****

The *Power of Open* is a study into how Creative Commons’ licensing and
copyright tools contribute to collaboration and innovation. It includes case
studies of leading scientists, educators, artists and entrepreneurs, who
have benefited from Creative Commons' tools. They include Jonathan Worth, an
internationally recognized photographer whose work is part of the permanent
collection of the National Portrait Gallery.****

At the launch event, Creative Commons will offer an introduction to The
Power of Open given by Professor Paul Webly, along with presentations by:***
*

Ben White - on the importance of clear and open licensing for innovation****

Jonathan Worth - on the importance of content sharing and collaboration for
the creative industries****

The evening will conclude with a hosted reception.****

*About Creative Commons:* Creative Commons’ licensing has been widely
adopted by organizations such as Wikipedia, Al Jazeera, GlaxoSmithKline,
YouTube and Flickr, as well as dozens of governments, libraries, museums and
galleries around the world. At present, over 500 million pieces of content
have a Creative Commons license. ****

*About JISC:* JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) inspires UK
colleges and universities in the innovative use of digital technologies,
helping to maintain the UK's position as a global leader in education. JISC
is funded by the UK higher and further education funding bodies and UK
Research Councils. ****

*About Professor Paul Webly*: Professor Paul Webley took office as Director
and Principal of SOAS in August 2006. Previously, he served as Senior Deputy
Vice-Chancellor at the University of Exeter, UK. Professor Webley’s
undergraduate and postgraduate education was at the London School of
Economics.****

*About Ben White*: Ben White is the head of Intellectual Property at the
British Library, overseeing both licensing with journal publishers as well
as leading copyright advocacy on behalf of the British Library.****

*About Jonathan Worth*: Jonathan Worth is an internationally recognized
photographer who works from London and New York. His work has appeared in
numerous publications and exhibitions, and is part of the permanent
collection of the National Portrait Gallery.****
