Thanks for the tips!  As discussed in #ckan, I might start with
something a bit "nicer", as you put it, such as
http://trac.ckan.org/ticket/1329.  I've used mostly SVN and GIT so
far, so this'll give me a chance to grapple with Bitbucket / Mercurial
before diving in too deep.
