Check also the permissions on the directory /usr/lib/ckan/default/build. If it's not there, create it. Then change to more friendly priviledges with `chmod` and `chown`

The install line I used is from the instructions for ckanext-spatial http://ckanext-spatial.readthedocs.org/en/latest/install.html

pip install -e "git+https://github.com/okfn/ckanext-spatial.git@stable#egg=ckanext-spatial"

I tried it with and without the quotations

Have you tried it with 'sudo pip install'? Normally you might not need to do 'sudo', but try it anyway

I am using the package CKAN install with Ubunto 12.04
I have the DataStore, FileStore and Data Viewer Extensions installed.
