Hey all,

Having gone through this with other groups, I'd say anything but slack. I
know some people enjoy it and I'd go with whatever the majority goes for,
*but:*

1. Slack caps history search unless you pay at least $6.99 USD *per user*, *per
month. *Chat history not retained is knowledge lost, especially for a
technical open-source project. Almost all other alternatives allow
unlimited history for no cost. (This has come back to bite almost every
group I've ever been a part of which switched to Slack)
2. Slack allows self-signup, and API-based signup as a *paid feature only*.
Although many slacks are running 3rd party programs hosted by a volunteer
to do automatic account creation, slack can and has permanently deleted
slacks without notice for using it.
3. Slack is a completely closed black box. They allowed IRC and XMPP
integration just long enough to get users, then immediately killed them.
Several alternatives (such as gitter) are completely open source and free.

Honestly, I prefer IRC, but I can see myself being in the minority here
especially if we want to engage more non-technical end-users. As a
developer, I've been on Freenode consistently for over a decade and watched
many alternatives come and go. If we really want a different option I would
suggest gitter because it is open source and 100% free.

Thank you,
Tyler Kennedy
