This should definitely be done. Any help compiling the list gratefully
received -- and explicit patches especially welcome ;0

Indeed, and I think OSI provide a page for each license. One question
i have is what to about license versions -- in some case we can
generate an explicit new license e.g. GPLv3 versus GPLv2 but what
about CC licenses?
