[ckan4rdm] CKAN as research data repository

Vasily

I work with Birgit and we've been discussing your question and have done some estimates ....

On the St Andrews size question, for the number of metadata records in our data catalogue (which we expect will be in Pure) we're estimating up to 300 records per year but growing gradually year on year; for CKAN acting as our data repository, it depends on how many data sets need to be stored locally rather than externally .. the latter being the favoured route, assuming costs and compliance issues are acceptable. Some institutions have estimated a 2/3 : 1/3 (internal:external) split ... but for us it is really a guestimate at the moment.

On the broader question, I don't know .. but others on the list may be able to respond.

All the best

Anna

Thanks Birgit for an interesting collection of CKAN uses. Please what size of the research data catalogue (number of entries) are you thinking of in St Andrews? Also what might be the biggest CKAN catalogue for RDM at the moment?

With kind regards,

Subject: [ckan4rdm] CKAN as research data repository

Hello

In October I sent a message asking about current uses of CKAN for RDM. Many thanks for all the responses on and off list. Some of the feedback that I received was to share these responses. I have therefore taken the liberty of summarising messages and have posted my summary on our blog:

http://research-computing.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/2013/11/27/using-ckan-for-research-data-management/

The post also contains a short description of our current CKAN pilot. We are keen for further discussion to take place on how others are using CKAN, and, where there is common interest, to potentially collaborate. Some private responses have already indicated an interest in collaboration that we will be following up shortly. Is there wider interest for investigating the potential to work collaboratively across institutions?

Kind regards
Birgit
