Grants programme in policy relevant to microbiology

Today we face myriad uncertainties of globalization, economic crisis, climate change and environmental degradation. What will the future look like - and what role will science have in it?

Inspired by these questions, the Society for General Microbiology is offering a grant scheme for undergraduate or Masters students that gives a deeper practical understanding of the way science interacts with policy, politics and the economy.

As future leaders in the policy field, grantees will investigate a major policy problem, conduct desk-based research and analysis and write a report of their findings. They will have the opportunity to develop their expertise in policy analysis and network within the policy community.

The scheme will focus on microbiology in a wider economic, political and social context. Microbiological expertise and technologies play a key role in healthcare, agriculture and in industrial processes including 'green' chemistry and bio-fuel production, and the candidate's contribution will necessarily lie in these or related areas.

Candidates should send a one-page covering letter explaining why they want the grant, a two-page CV, and a completed application form (available for download on our website). The application deadline is 22 June 2012. The successful candidate will be notified by 6 July 2012.

The scheme lasts 6-8 weeks and attracts a stipend of £1850 towards personal expenses (travel, accommodation and subsistence), with an additional sum of up to £400 for specified research costs.

Applicants should be registered on a degree course at a university in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applications will also be considered from individuals who have completed a UK or Irish degree course in the past 12 months, i.e., after May 2011, as would be the case for Masters students seeking post-course work experience.
