Coder/Designer/Journalist/Statistician? - this message is for you. Fancy a
chance to have your work publicised in Helsingin Sanomat?

A quick update from the Open Knowledge Festival Preparations and an
invitation to a hackday:

As you may know, 3 days in the festival week will be dedicated to data
journalism and visualisation.

On *Friday 21st September*, Helsingin Sanomat invites coders, designers,
journalists and open data activists to *HS Open Hackathon* to build
visualizations or applications that use open data. Using international data
from the World Bank and other sources (see suggested datasets [1]), groups
of three (at least one coder, journalist and a designer) will create a
working application or visualization from scratch.
*
*
The goal for each group is to make an news application that tells a visual
story on a global topic such as health, children's welfare or inequality
around the world. News applications can also crowdsource data or be a
game. The target for the day is to produce 560×400 pixel application that
can be embedded into any web page.

*In the previous Hackathons, some of the best applications have been bought
and published by Helsingin Sanomat - fingers crossed, there will be some
good applications coming out of this one too so this can happen this time
too! *
*
*
*NB's: *
** REGISTRATION for the hackathon is OPEN ONLY FOR THE NEXT 5 DAYS, so
register soon *
** You do *not* need an OKFestival ticket to participate in the hackathon* -
however unfortunately, participating in the hackathon does not grant you
access to the rest of the festival.

On the organisers:

*Helsingin Sanomat* (http://www.hs.fi/english/) is one of the biggest
Finnish news papers and also one of the trailblazers as regards having an
explicit open data policy [2] in the newsroom.
