I'm really interested in the browser extension option - I think it has
quite a bit to recommend it (you can do full xhr, access now to good
local storage).
I actually spent a while last year playing with the chrome scraper and
looking at how one could update it (in particular, chrome now supports
ways to add panels to the "developer" section).
Doing work on local storage in the browser (all of this now available
from extensions) as part of the Data Explorer
(http://explorer.okfnlabs.org/) indicate to me that supporting local
saving should not be too hard :-)
