FWIW, there's a sql like language that dangles of the GOogle Spreadsheets API

It's one good place to start experimenting with SQL like queries without having to install any.

ANother place to start experimenting with SQLite queries is scraperwiki. If you go to a scraper page on Scraperwiki, then go to the scraper's API page, you can try running SQLite queries over the databases tables associated with that scraper.
