Matt,
Late reply:
I would use QGIS, a shapefile of country borders and the feature Merge attributes by location.
This is very clean and is simpler.

Subject: [Spam?] [ddj] Reverse Geocoding Country: Best Practice
Importance: Low
Dear all,
I have a table which includes latitude/longitude values but no clean country location. I'm presently fiddling with the Google sheets IMPORTXML method to get a plain country field:
http://schoolofdata.org/handbook/recipes/geocoding/
...which is a bit untidy due to xPath selection on the resulting XML.
Does anyone know a slicker tool or method to achieve this? I did start by loading the data into mapping apps and seeing if they exported with country data but nothing I found did that.
Thanks,
Matt
