[ddj] AIS ship tracking data

Hello all,

I'm an editor at New Scientist magazine in London. I'm enthusiastic about
data journalism, but don't have a lot of experience.

At the moment, I am thinking about a story I have coming up about the
shipping industry. I'd love to create a map that shows the locations of all
the ships on the ocean at one specific (recent) point in time and
classifies them according to class. Actually this interactive does exactly
that https://www.shipmap.org/ But I'd like to make my own version so I can
customise it.

But my main issue is finding the data!

There is lots of AIS data out there, but I'm struggling to find a
comprehensive and free source.

I just wonder if anyone on the list has worked with shipping data has any
advice (or even might be interested in working with me to develop
something)?

Josh
