Hi all,

Just mailed this message below to Vitor Domingos in Portugal, as he
mentioned open data initiatives in Portugal. Let's see if we can scout out
some contacts in .pt.

Jonathan have you heard anything from the Paris bunch already?

best,
Ton

Subject: Open Data in Portugal?

Hi Vitor,

I just saw you tweet about a opendata.pt initiative. This has my interest,
as I and others from across the EU are trying to build a network of open
data advocates across Europe.
Are you yourself involved with open data? Or can you put me in touch with
people in Portugal who are?

Myself, I work in the Netherlands on open data projects, more as a connector
and community builder, and not on coding. Have been doing some work for the
Ministry for the Interior here, and also initiated ourdata.eu
Ourdata.eu tries to make examples from across the EU visible: initiatives to
raise open data awareness, examples of reuse of open data, and data sources
themselves. Not to build a catalogue of data sources but to make better
visible what is happening across Europe. Lots of things are happening that
cannot be easily found because of language differences. I don't know how to
search for open data in Portuguese, and you would probably have difficulty
finding things in Dutch. But if you already know something exists, because
you found an english reference to it, and have a URL to start from, you
already know what you are looking at, and you will probably feel more
motivated to dive deeper.

When it comes to catalogues, CKAN (part of the Open Knowledge Foundation,
http://www.ckan.net/about) has created a catalogue infrastructure which is
open to others. Currently the German Open Data Network is building a German
version, that can interact with the CKAN catalogue. Similar things are
happening in Sweden and Finland (opengov.se, opengov.fi). We would all love
to start interacting with people in Portugal as well.

Also I would like to point you to a monthly conference call we hold around
open data to discuss things as mentioned above. More on that call :

Hope to hear from you, and looking forward to hear more about open data in
Portugal.

best,

Ton
