Dear Jonathan and others,
Here's another update from the OpenData frontline in France where
things are moving quite a bit since a few weeks and in the coming
months.
First, a nice new development came after we publicly complained about
the city of Paris taking an ambiguous direction concerning OpenData by
not guaranteeing openness in its initial project: the city will
probably decide to go on with a french translation of the ODBL licence
and we participate in a group that was created by a french lawyer from
the free and open source community in order to help them through their
reflexion and developments.
We also met with François Bancilhon, the main person behind the
publicly founded Data-Publica project. Like we expected, this will be
a data repositary with a very similar approach to CKAN, which will
probably include non-open data as well. They will present their first
demo on the 16th of September with a significative amount of first
datasets included.
Even though this is coming as a concurrent, this doesn't refrain us
from working on our french citizen data repository and we will still
publish our CKAN instance during the fall. We are currently discussing
with other partners the opportunity of organizing for a couple weeks a
"Data Hunt" like we discussed previously. This would come right after
our release of CKAN, some time close to the Open Government Data Camp
in London. Then a few weeks later, by the beginning of December, the
hunt would be concluded with an Open Data Development Week-end in
Paris where developpers would assemble in order to complete the hunt
and work on applications reusing these data.
Let us know if you have any question or advice on all of that!
