With the announcement yesterday I am fearful that we are seeing a gradual drift from the concept that data should be made available openly and without charge.

The latest Cabinet Office press release regarding the Public Data Corporation (PDC) alludes to the concept of charging structures for public data.

"By bringing valuable Government data together, governed by a consistent set of principles around data collection, maintenance, production and charging, the Government can share best practice, drive efficiencies and create innovative public services for citizens and businesses"

If charging is being developed, it is going to make the job of convincing UK public bodies to release data freely more difficult as I guess they would want to hang around until the format of the PDC is decided.
