Too much communism! Perhaps a pricecup and a spanner? Other colors...

Okay - so it seems like people are not so keen on the crossed hammer/spanner, which is one of the standard webdings icons [1] - and alludes to the open gov data spanner [2]. Hence I'll try and get in touch with Matt Jones, who created the 'Get Excited and Make Things'
poster, and see if he'll give us permission to incorporate his spanner crown thing [3]. Failing that I'll try and substitute in something which doesn't have hammer and sickle connotations!

colour's great. I also prefer sans serif but I think the text should be in bold - it's clearer.

Some key ideas for rules:
* Pan-European angle is strongly encouraged
* Entries for apps must come from team which contains groups/individuals from at least 2 EU member states
* Repurposed apps are allowed (i.e. an app that exists for London can be expanded to work for Paris + Torino and entered)
* Apps must be open source
* Core data must be freely reusable and derived data must be openly licensed
Any more ideas? These are just a few bits which may stand out. I will also review rules from our list here:
http://opengovernmentdata.org/competitions
We're talking to people at Open Cities about the website. The key thing will be to have something *really* simple (i.e. *really, really*
simple) which has:
* a big countdown for entries somewhere near the top ('X days left!')
* a piece of text explaining the basic 'what' and 'why' of the competition - as parsimonious as possible
* some rules - preferably simple and entertaining to read
* entry forms for 'ideas', 'apps' and 'visualisations'
* drop down menu to have material in multiple languages
All comments welcome. We're going to be fixing all of this down in next couple of weeks or so.
All the best,
Jonathan

Trying to get in touch to ask permission to incorporate this into the Open Data Challenge logo! ;-)

For me the 'you have to team up with someone in another country' angle is quite nice as it means people in different countries will have to talk and work together (which is partly what the competition seeks to encourage).
Re: open source + open data in apps, what about 'we strongly encourage entrants to use open licenses for code, content and data'?

On the one hand, I like that idea. On the other hand, I wonder whether we're overconstraining things.
> Re: open source + open data in apps, what about 'we strongly encourage

I don't think we should require open source licenses for the apps (or make this part of the evaluation) -- in fact, if somebody came up with something that's productized and sold later on, we should welcome that.
At the same time I do think we need to say something about the data used: For example, I don't think we're looking for an app that required 1M EUR upfront investment to acquire the data.
