I keep being told that employees are not primarily motivated by money,
anyway. Presumably that's extra-true for a salary that is easily
replaceable elsewhere.
Which suggests we should set salaries that are fair, rather than
salaries we think will motivate people to stay with us.
I'd also recommend regular reviews that the employee does not have to
ask for :-)
