Hmm, we production deploy on debian etch and have had no problems.

These should only need read permissions. Are you saying that these files 
have been installed with no general read permissions (i.e. 660 or similar).

OK, that's weird because it implies mod-python couldn't import kforge. 
Does importing kforge from a python shell work i.e.:

$ python
 >>> import kforge
