Swinburne Institute for Social Research - Professional Development Series

Presenter: Dr Jack Barton (AURIN), Amanda Lawrence and Camilo Jorquera (APO)

Title: AURIN and APO - Data, documents and tools for research, policy and industry

Date: Friday, 1 July 2016

Time: 2:00 - 4:00pm followed by drinks and nibbles

Venue: BA407 (opposite the library) Glenrerrie train station on Lilydale or Alamein line 5 minutes walk

AURIN provides urban researchers, policy and decision-makers with an infrastructure to facilitate web-based access to a wealth of information on urban environments across Australia. AURIN provides live links to some 1,650 datasets and over 100 analytical tools by which urban information can be accessed, interrogated, modelled and simulated.

Participants in the AURIN workshop will explore the extensive data repositories and extract information about Australian cities. Using the sophisticated tools contained within the AURIN portal, participants can mould this information into visible and sharable knowledge. Until now, much of this information has remained behind closed doors. AURIN enables access to this data for built environment professionals across all fields, letting users discover and mash-up data, information and knowledge.

Participants can undertake comparative analyses to study health data, analyse revealing socio-economic information, investigate walkability of neighbourhoods and more. Familiarity with these metrics is essential to understanding patterns of urban development and to best inform smart urban growth for a sustainable future.

Jack Barton is AURIN Urban Data and e-Research Facilitator, Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network at University of Melbourne aurin.org.au<http://aurin.org.au/>

Australian Policy Online (apo.org.au) is an open access database of quality public interest research, policy and practice resources. APO holds records and full text for over 30,000 grey literature and journal articles, data and statistics, commentary audio, video, websites, events, jobs and other resources. Content is sourced from 4000 organisations in Australia, New Zealand and internationally and 12,000 authors and each item has detailed metadata records. APO issues DOIs for hosted content and is interoperable with a range of systems including Orcid, Datacite, Altmetrics, Trove, and via an API to research management systems and other interested parties.

Thanks to support from the Australian Research Council LIEF program and the Australian National Data Service APO is embarking on some major projects in 2016 including expanding the range and scope of our data and publication collections, improving data hosting capabilities and interoperability, establishing a public digitisation program with the Internet Archive and working with AURIN on linking publications and related data. In this presentation APO staff will briefly discuss the capacities of APO and how the new database tools and content help further support the research and publishing needs of those in public policy, industry, civil society and education.

Amanda Lawrence is Research and Strategy Manager and Camilo Jorquera is Web and Database Coordinator at APO apo.org.au

APO was founded by the Swinburne Institute for Social Research and has been based at Swinburne University of Technology since 2002. APO major supporters are the Australian Research Council, the Australian National Data Service, the Australian and New Zealand School of Government, Swinburne University of Technology, University of South Australia, the Henry Halloran Trust, Sydney University, RMIT University, University of Canberra and Victoria University of Wellington.
