In Anwesenheit des Regisseurs und dreifachen Oscar-gewinners Oliver Stone und der beiden Hauptdarsteller Joseph Gordon-Levitt und Shailene Woodley sowie den Produzenten Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff und Philip Schulz-Deyle feiern wir die Schweizer Premiere von SNOWDEN am ZFF (24.9.).

Das Biopic über jenen Mann, der mit dem epochalsten Whistleblow die Weltpolitik erschütterte, ist hochaktuell: am gleichen Tag stimmt das Schweizer Volk über das Gesetz zum Nachrichtendienst ab. Wir planen Anfang/Mitte Oktober Podiumsgespräche zum Thema Massenüberwachung in Zusammenarbeit mit Amnesty International. Zurzeit führt Amnesty International eine Kampagne, die US-Präsident Obama zur Begnadigung von SNOWDEN auffordert.

Inhalt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (INCEPTION, LOOPER, DON JON, THE WALK) spielt Edward J. Snowden, den ehemaligen Angestellten der National Security Agency (NSA), der als Whistleblower auf die Massenüberwachung durch die USA aufmerksam machte. Als Snowden Dokumente zum geheimen globalen Massenüberwachungsprogramm der NSA veröffentlichte, öffnete er der Welt die Augen, verschloss aber zugleich die Türen für seine Zukunft, indem er Karriere, Freundin und Heimat aufgeben musste.

Neben Gordon-Levitt sind in weiteren Rollen etwa Shailene Woodley (THE DESCENDANTS, DIVERGENT) sowie die Oscar-Gewinner Melissa Leo (THE FIGHTER, FROZEN RIVER) und Nicolas Cage (LEAVING LAS VEGAS, CON-AIR) zu sehen. Stone verfasste das Drehbuch zusammen mit Kieran Fitzgerald, basierend auf Luke Hardings Sachbuch „The Snowden Files” und Anatoly Kucherenas Roman „Time of the Octopus”.

Dear friends & colleagues, 

Dear Community,

I am currently attending a 3 month course <http://ledeprogram.com/>  at Columbia University in New York (together with Paul Ronga from Tribune de Genève and Mathias Born, Berner Zeitung). We are currently half way into the programme. It's basically a course for journalists (but not just journalists), to enhance their data gathering, analytic skills (learning Python, Panda libraries, SQL, combining the three, scraping with BeautifulSoup and using Selenium for automated scraping, and much more).

I thought it would be a good moment to reach out to the community and share some of the readings and stories we've stubbled across. The main gist is that data driven society in the US may be a little more sophisticated than in Switzerland and Europe in general. But they are actually not all that far ahead. They are dealing with very similar problems and opportunities.

This is just a random collection of readings, which some of you might find inspirational or just offer a different perspective on data and how we deal with it.
