[okfn-discuss] mapping European OERs

Hi again everyone,

The ODEPO <http://wiki.creativecommons.org/ODEPO> system now also asks for
location and contact info (name and email). The location field can
accommodate multiple identifiers, which should be ordered from specific to
general (i.e., city, state, country, region), each of which then becomes
amenable to sorting. See the ccLearn
entry<http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Creative_Commons_-_ccLearn>for
an example. All fields are optional (i.e., "state" may not apply, and
you don't have to include "region", though it is necessary to do so if you
intend to sort entries that way, such as within "Europe").

Note that we are continuing to work on this system. Any data that are added
will be retained, so you need not fear any loss of data. However, we are
likely to move the URL of ODEPO to the OER Community site that we are
building. All that means is that you may need to update your links at some
point relatively soon. Don;t let that stop you from adding in organizational
information now though.

Also, if you have additional fields that you are interested in including,
you have a few options.

One option is to just let us know. We will not be expanding the number of
fields infinitely, but if there is a clear interest in some category of
information, we can add it. In the future, we hope to implement a way for
anyone (who is signed in) to specify a new category as they wish. We won't
be looking into that possibility until later this Fall.

Another option is to use some basic wiki-syntax for the free-form text
field. If there is a categorization that you would like to include, you can
tell ODEPO that some part of the entry is an identifiable property by using
the following notation: [["property"::"value"]] For example, I might want
to put the following sentence into the free text field: "The Creative
Commons International office is primarily concerned with the legal porting
process for the CC licenses in different jurisdictions." Perhaps I am
interested in categorizing the primary type of activity for organizations in
ODEPO; in this case, the primary activity (a "property") would be "legal". I
can encode this in a manner that Mediawiki can understand using the
following syntax: "The Creative Commons International office is primarily
concerned with the [[ActivityType::legal]] porting process for the CC
licenses in different jurisdictions." With this syntax, Mediawiki now
understands that there is a property (called ActivityType), and one of the
values of this property is "legal". By re-using this same property notation
for other entries, you could add additional values, such as "business", or
"entertainment", or whatever.

We are also going to be working on the search function, which is behaving a
little strangely at the moment. In the meantime, browsing ODEPO is an
excellent way to drill down into the data and sort entries in whatever
manner you desire.

Please add your data! Feedback encouraged!

Best,

-Ahrash
