Hello Scandinavians!
Great initiative Miska, thanks for taking the lead again!
I have these suggestions so far:
- Reading the report at
http://blog.okfn.org/2015/07/09/democratising-the-data-revolution/ and
following and taking note of what ideas and proposals comes up globally
over at
https://discuss.okfn.org/t/new-discussion-paper-democratising-the-data-revolution/462.
Many is probably applicable to Scandinavian countries as well. Doing
this before the meeting will probably bring in a lot more innovative
perspectives than if we are limited to our own societal & world views.
- I concur with Martin Malthe Borch's idea of working with
Folkehøjskoler (Folkhögskolor in Sweden are slightly different).
- I also suggest using the well-developed infrastructure of adult
educational associations (available in Sweden as Studieförbund
<https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studief%C3%B6rbund> and Norway too). It
can support growth for Open Knowledge both organisationally and
economically but also simplify the potential of reaching different
target groups. An example would be to fund e.g. any kind of
(un/)employment-related data via e.g. ABF
<https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABF> the association which sprung out of
the workers' rights movement. Another example is sustainability & census
data via the association for a living countryside
<https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studief%C3%B6rbundet_Vuxenskolan> or
perhaps openspending & opengov projects and study circles with
Medborgarskolan <https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medborgarskolan> (often
educating private & public sector). Why I suggest this idea is that all
of these associations have some kind of political connection
historically (you can guess or click the links to learn more). In this
way we can be agnostic to the political system just like a technical
solution like WikiData is language agnostic. Co-developing School of
Data and Open Science course for local languages are concrete projects
which could be run with support from these. It's very easy to get
monetary support for good things from this system. :)
- We could also run something in each country collaboratively like
Betahaus <http://www.betahaus.com/berlin/> in Berlin with a stricter
focus on openness & democracy. Like a physical "OpenLabs" (there's
already a OpenLabs <http://openlabsthlm.se/> which is restricted to
Stockholm). There is also a location-independent alternative which could
be used for challenges with Open Data called Folklabbet
<http://folklabbet.se> (n.b! partiality, I co-founded it) resulting in
social innovations. Open Knowledge Sweden is also collaborating with the
Swedish branch of Betahaus <www.betahaus.net>. It does not run a
physical Betahaus currently but we could probably do that
collaboratively. I know that at least VINNOVA has been very eager to
fund a Swedish one. All that Betahaus do is open, collaborative and
strengthens democracy.
I hope to come to the workshop meeting as I will be in Denmark but will
perhaps be busy at my education in Aarhus...
Best regards,
Mattias
