Dear colleagues and friends of open data and its portals,
We are pleased to announce you that the Commission is making available - in
beta version - its own open data portal.
With this new portal the Commission provides a single access point to the
data it holds, making it easy to retrieve datasets that currently are
published on a multitude of different websites and portals of the
Commission services.****
** **
The purpose of this portal is to make easily available all reusable data
hold by the Commission and the other European Institutions through one
single gateway.
Over the past months we have worked hard to make available a first
operational version, offering an initial set of interactive features and an
interesting, even if not yet complete, range of datasets and applications.
Datasets span from the entire collection of Eurostat statistical tables
(currently making up more than 95% of the portal content) to other
voluminous data sets as the Commission Secretariat-General Transparency
Register (the register of stakeholder organisations, a.k.a. 'lobbyists').
Several datasets and references to visualisation applications are provided
by the European Environment Agency as well as by the Publications Office,
already contributing to the interinstitutional scope of the portal.
More content is to come: we target more services inside the Commission and
the other EU institutions and bodies. That is why we will call it the
*EU*Open Data Portal. It is placed already under an
inter-institutional URL.
*The EU Open Data Portal is available since a few days at this URL:
http://open-data.europa.eu.*
** **
At the moment the Portal is not yet dimensioned for an important number of
users, and some known issues regarding the GUI and the content still remain
to be fixed in the coming few weeks. The application section also will very
soon be restructured, and the current applications fixed.
However, we address you as a professional and competent user, in order to
show you the site in "avant-première" and receive from you feedback,
critics, comments. For these reasons we will be grateful if you will take
the time to use the portal and "play" with it. However, please do not
communicate widely the URL yet; a more extended communication will be
prepared by the Commission in January.
So, why do we send you the link?
You are our 'open data friends'. You want to make #ogd happen. We need your
feedback to show us ways to improve the site. There are still some bugs to
fix and many ways of improvement, we know, but we may not have thought of
all of them.
We would be particularly interested in hearing from you on:****
** **
- How do you like the functionality? (data and applications section, search
capabilities, metadata presentation, links to datasets and applications,
user friendliness, ...)
- How do you like the content? (data granularity, quality/relevance of
metadata, kind of needed applications, ...)
- What did you expect to find and what did you expect the portal could do
for you - and can do for the wider open data community.
*We will then be pleased to receive your feedback, on the subjects
mentioned above but also regarding any issue you think might help us in
providing a tool as much as possible fulfilling your needs and the needs of
the community. Please send your comments to the address:*

*OP-ODP-CONTACT at publications.europa.eu*
and to the colleagues in copy of this message.****
** **
The portal is the result of the excellent cooperation between DG CONNECT
and the Publications Office and it will be important that we all listen to
your praise (and your suggestions for further improvement) first-hand! ****
** **
Thanking you in advance for the time you will dedicate to the portal and
for your feedback,
and wishing you a merry Christmas and a pleasant and successful year 2013,**
**
