OK this is now fixed. It turns out (from speaking again and doing more
digging) that it was *not* anything to do with our dns but some issues
with apache at their end (so down votes to the first support person
who got this all wrong and pointed the finger at our DNS setup but up
votes for the 2nd support staffer)

Also fixed. Upgrade seemed to have borked the permissions ...
