*Open Data for Development Camp*

A 2-day conference on using open data in international development aid

How can open data contribute to rescue efforts after a natural disaster?
What do the latest IT technologies mean for people in developing countries?
These topics and more are the focus of the Open<http://openforchange.info/oddc>

<http://openforchange.info/oddc>Camp <http://openforchange.info/oddc> on the
12th and 13th of May at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam.

Open data brings the worlds of hackers and development organizations
together in a quest for innovative technologies to unlock information for
international development aid.

<http://openforchange.info/oddc>Camp <http://openforchange.info/oddc> is an
initiative of Open for Change, a new network, operating under the Partos
platform. In cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Netherlands and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), the organizers want the
Netherlands to be pioneers in this field.

The event brings together a diverse crowd of development aid workers,
policy-makers, researchers, journalists, IT, software developers and media.
Speakers include international experts such as, Richard Murby of the World
Bank, Maarten Broughton Ambassador of International Development at the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tariq Khokhar of Aidinfo, Data journalist Jelle
Kamsma of Nu.nl, Vincent Wintermans of UNESCO and Bas and Marijn Rijken
Kotterink of TNO.

The developments and insights from open data have already been enormous in a
short amount of time. This month the World Bank awarded a prize to the
fifteen most interesting software applications based on its data release.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also announced that it will soon
release its data.

*Open data saves lives in Haiti*

One shining example of how open data had a positive impact was in the
aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti last year. The open source program
Ushahidi <http://www.ushahidi.com> armed aid workers with maps and text
messaging platforms to help find those people in need.

Open data and innovative applications have enormous potential. Open Data
provides development organizations a chance to play an innovative role,
inviting broader involvement of people worldwide, while contributing to
transparency and greater effectiveness for international cooperation.
