Sam I can only agree with you!
I put Google within brackets exactly to remark that "free" should be 
threat as "free under the Google vocabulary" :)

however i must recognize that FusionTables are free at the moment and 
experimental too.
CartoDB is lovely, rock solid and open source but you can use for free 
only up to 5 tables
than you have to make a subscription

for the sake I've stressed the geocoding feature of both the tools with 
some of my datasets
and found the Fusion Table capabilities stronger respect CartoDB.
CartoDB however was superior with many other features like map 
personalization, data querying and the overall visualization tweaking
