[okfn-za] [Geeklist] Fwd: Changing IT curriculum to Delphi: online petition

I'm confused, isn't Delphi still commercial, owned by Embarcadero (I admit
to googling that name)? Another quick Google shoes "Project JEDI"
conserving some open source components under a Mozilla license
http://www.delphi-jedi.org. If the concern is Open Source, isn't there the
OpenJDK for Java?

Either way, the only time I ever run into Delphi are the control panels for
malicious trojan tools coming out of Russia. I can't think of a single
instance of it being used in a company in production in any of my
professional experience for the last 5 years. Should we not be pushing for
kids to learn something directly useful?

Then again, I started on Pascal in school, and it drove home some good
starting concepts, I just can't help but feel Java would be more useful
given it's deploy base.
