[Open-access] Bibsoup Malaria

Hi all,

As was discussed during our latest Skype meeting I have talked with Bart
Knols on how we would like the database to be structured and on the making
of a first Open Access Index for Malaria. Yesterday I had an over 2 hours
Skype meeting with Bart and Ingeborg van Schayk who is the director of the
Dutch Malaria Foundation.
As a result we will send Mark a list of all that we could think of in
terms of biblio Fields and editing possibilities.that we found useful.

We have come up with another additional idea. The MalariaWorld already has
a extensive database of malaria literature for 2010-present.. In this
database it is indicated which refs are Open Access, in some cases there
are links to full text. All refs have mentioning of corresponding authors
email addresses.
Would it be possible for Mark to make a Malaria Bibsoup for the years
2010+2011 from your big Pubmed extract, and also make a Bibsoup from the
MalariaWorld database for these years.? What format would you need to be
able to do it? We could then compare the overlap in references (ideally
100%) and apply the OA Fields in the MW Database to the corresponding
references for the Pubmed derived Bibsoup. It would allow us to make the
malaria index for those 2 years rather quickly, Open Access Index for
Malaria 2012 based on the publications for the years 2010-2011. We could
also see within a relative short time what the publisher and journal
ranking looks like for this most recent 2 year period. The comparison of
the MalariaWorld and the Pubmed Bibsoup could serve as a kind of control
for the followed procedure of extraction from Pubmed.
We have come to think that the interesting period to cover for the Open
Access Index would consist of the last 10 years, 5 periods of 2 years..You
could probably make (sub)databases for these periods in a rather
straightforward way and see how many publications there are in total.
The editing of all these references by way of crowdsourcing would be the
next step. According to Bart the idea will generate enough enthousiasm in.
the MalariaWorld community to get it done fast Of course we will need
editing possibilities and proper instructions for the participants.
We at MalariaWorld see the making of a Bibsoup Malaria database as an ideal
community project . In our view this Malaria database would be 'de facto'
made by the Malaria community and for the community, ideally giving access
to the full content of all malaria related articles, be open to everyone
and be managed by the community( actualized, edited etc)..

One other important issue. We have been discussing the practical aspects of
a Malaria Bibsoup as a product of collaboration between OKFN and
MalariaWorld. In my emails and in the open access WIKI I have proposed a
structure where the MalariaWorld community will be of the many communities
under @ccess, but that @ccess will not be hosting these communities on OKFN
servers. Instead the existing platforms including websites will be linked
to from the @ccess website, where there could for instance be a
introductory page + button for access to MalariaWorld. In this way all
Malaria interested people would go to MalariaWorld for access to the
malaria database, contacts , discussions, social networking, collaboration
etc. For contacts *between* communities @ccess could provide the platform.
This will be very important for cross-fertilisation between groups. For us
this means that we would like to see the* malaria Bibsoup hosted by the
malaria community* (and the carcinoma Bibsoup by the carcinoma community
and.so on).

Our (MalariaWorld's) pertinent question is what you think of the networking
structure for @ccess and people communities running their own Information
servers as I have proposed in the open access wiki/website and explained in
more detail here in this mail
