Dear all,
as some of you may already know the current issue of World Archaeology
is a special issue, edited by Mark Lake, dedicated to "Open Archaeology":

	http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rwar20/44/4

Most papers deal with open data, its creation, dissemination and use.
I have had a chance to read preliminary versions of some papers and it
is truly a state-of-the-art discussion of the potential, problems and
established good practice in this field. As Mark puts it in the
introduction to the volume, there has been a tendency for literature
about open [data|access|source software] in archaeology to be confined
to the realm of "archaeological computing" and it is only rarely that
mainstream archaeology has a chance to learn about the ground-breaking
developments we are collectively making. In this sense, the value of
this work is going to be reflected also by the impact it will have on
future archaeological work, globally.

Some of the authors have expressed their discontent (or rather they
are doing it right now as I write, in the twittersphere) for the
contradiction of a volume on "open archaeology" that is not itself
open (i.e. Open Access). Possibly some or all of the papers could be
collected in pre-print form and re-published at our blog on the OKFN
website. We will post any updates here.

Congratulations again to all the authors!

Ciao
Stefano
