And indeed these days it is often forgotten that the whole "open" (as
in "open source") discourse to a large extent has its roots in trying
to balance the free software world with the investment banking
(intellectual property rent capture) world during the dot-com boom by
introducing "open" as a less militant and principled version of
free/libre that could, in the limit, be interpreted as "non-free" or
"closed" by a skilled rhetoretician or marketeer.
Or that's one interpretation of what happened, anyways :)
