Dear OpenSpending Group,

Just wanted to let you know that last Friday, the World Bank Finances
team hosted an "ideation" event called the Development Data Challenge
around the usage of open financial data. Chris Taggart (who I believe
is on this distro list) led a table at this event on
Contracts/Procurement- the table's idea was declared the winning idea.
This also led to some contracts/procurement data being published
immediately following the event. The next day at Random Hacks of
Kindness, a group of developers took this data and created a data
visualization application called "Show Me the Money" which looks to
capture the flow of development contract money, focused on whether it
"stays in" the country or "flows out." This app took top prize at
RHoKDC.

You can read more about the DDC & RHoK here:
http://blogs.worldbank.org/opendata/the-power-of-open-crowd-sourced-ideas-crowd-powered-solutions

If there is anyone on this list in the DC area who is interested in
continuing to work on this app, we're looking to develop this further
at http://dc.startupweekend.org/ next weekend (June 15-17).

A few items we're looking to explore:

1. can this national data be linked to sub-national location (to
show/analyze hyperlocal flows)
2. can we tie this to information found in corporate databases (like
Open Corporates)
3. can we build in some compelling citizen feedback/engagement
functions to collect information about suppliers and projects

If you're interested in working with us or have questions, please feel
free to contact me.

Sam Lee

A very warm thank you to Mark Brough at PWYF (an awesome guy who I
also believe is on this distro) for initially seeding the hackathon
idea with us many months ago.
