What is it all about:
International and national development programs rely increasingly on the use of ICTs and data to pursue their objectives. The field of ICT4D in particular has developed rapidly in response to the vast opportunities enabled by increased access to digital and mobile media, broad uptake of social media, and powerful algorithms and tracking software to collect information on previously distant and remote populations. 

There are significant concerns, however, about how the increased gathering, use and sharing of data impacts local communities and development stakeholders. To better understand the implications of data and technology for privacy, security and ethical standards in development programming, we’ll be convening a handful of dedicated thinkers and doers to consider some hard questions :
What safeguards do development projects implement to protect the privacy of stakeholders when they collect and share data? 
How do stakeholders understand data that is generated about them? How do they exercise control over that data? 
How do data collection projects conceptualize and secure informed consent? 
Is the very notion of informed consent inappropriate for certain vulnerable populations? When is privacy a “western luxury” and when is it an imperative?
When is it ok to share development data with governments and corporations? 
Is it possible to “anonymize” development data?

What will happen?
This will be a participatory, open discussion, working towards strong, actionable outputs - checklists, strategies, guides, strong working groups, brilliant ideas. We are looking for development practitioners, ICT4D experts, policy geeks and advocacy nerds.
