[open-government] Two reasons for open government data looking for examples

I am interested to hear if anyone has seen examples of these arguments I've
found myself using to justify open government data:

Open data means that
  - others can & do clean messy data up for everyone's benefit, reducing
costs and providing value to the source agency
  - third parties can & do provide analysis on the basis of data, providing
value to the source agency

I would like to be able to back these claims up with examples. Input and
discussion welcome.
