[open-government] Any thoughts on mobile payment systems for governments?

I believe you can already do this in a number of European countries -
pay for your parking meter via text/mobile app.

Any suggestions on vendors/approaches?

I would guess that once you have a system for paying parking it will
spread into other public services.

I also wonder if this has ever been connected into local alternative
currency systems??

The request below might present an interesting opportunity down the
road and we wouldn't want to be locked in with an non-flexible vendor.

Under Transportation & Public Works from yesterday's City Council meeting:
7.   On-Street Parking Mobile Phone Payment System:
Authorize issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for an on-street
parking mobile phone payment system.
Action Taken: Adopted.

1.) I'm looking forward to the day when I can get a notice that my
meter is running low, and just add money via my phone
2.) I wonder what the City's criteria for a system will be, and if the
public will have a chance to weigh in
