[open-government] DATA Act

Dear Julia (and all)

At present the UK 'Transparency agenda' is a mix of Codes of Practice, legal amendments (to FOIA)and experiments. There was an interesting analysis of this by the Public Administration Select Committee in the House of Commons
see http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201314/cmselect/cmpubadm/564/56402.htm

I've also written about one reform, asking local government to publish spending over £500-see my early findings here
Worthy, Ben, David Cameron's Transparency Revolution? The Impact of Open Data in the UK (November 29, 2013). Available at SSRN: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2361428 or http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.2361428

As of this moment, it said the government are seeking to put some of the data reforms (especially on local government spending) into law, though with general election less than a year away it may not happen.

Best

Subject: [open-government] DATA Act

Hey all,

As many of you may know, last week the U.S. House of Representatives
unanimously
passed<http://sunlightfoundation.com/blog/2014/04/28/data-act-clears-congress/>the
Digital Accountability and Transparency Act, or DATA
Act <http://beta.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/2061>, sending
it to President Barack Obama for his signature.

The bill would: 1) Establish government-wide financial data standards; 2)
Require the entire federal government to comply with the new standards; and
3) Ensure that more and better
#opendata<https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/opendata>is published
online.

It's something we here at Sunlight have been working on for years, and -
while it's not perfect - we're thrilled to see Congress taking this big
step for transparency.

Is anyone aware of any other legislation outside the US that compares to
the DATA Act? I am planning to compile a list of relevant laws.

Thanks,

Julia
