Hi Sophie (CC: OKFI open science list),
How are things in the UK? It's been a rather busy autumn here in Finland
on several different fronts, but I thought I'd give you a quick update
on what's been happening here.
The OSTI-materials (thanks again for making these available!) have been
adapted to various presentations, e.g. the one I had on our grad school
course "Making Science Matter" (there's also a blog post about the
course [1] by one of the visiting teachers). In case you're interested,
slides for the ~1 hour lecture I gave there are available in Google
Drive [2]. There's only so much one can squeeze in into one 1 hour
lecture - and frankly I overdid a little - but I think there's a lot of
potential in the OSTI materials. I tried to strike a balance between
general concepts/benefits of openness in science and some practical
advice (tools, licensing etc.). Based on the feedback I received from
the students, many found it slightly overwhelming, but interesting. I'd
be very interested in hearing what sort of general feedback you have
received on you OSTI lectures.
The Open Knowledge Road show has also been visiting several Finnish
cities out which 2 (both so far) have also had a open science related
event. I have not been personally involved with these, but few members
of the open science working group have. In Tampere, a peer learning
session was held on the topic of "How researcher can manage their
research data". Antti Poikola also blogged about the event [3], but it
being in Finnish it's probably of very limited utility to anyone not
speaking Finnish. In a following roadshow event held in Turku, Markus
Kainu led a workshop on "Open science practices in research".
A couple of weeks ago there was another interesting event here in
Helsinki titled "Nordic Perspectives on Open Access and Open Science"
[4]. Representing Open Knowledge Finland, Antti Poikola gave a talk
"Open knowledge in science and elsewhere" [5] using the ever evolving
presentation materials.
Next step we've been planning is probably to exchange experiences from
these various events and see where to head next!
With kind regards,
Joona
