Hi all!
For context, please see this thread in Facebook (in Finnish and sorry
for those not on FB):

Find below (very badly formatted) email exchange regarding OSTI
(http://opensciencetraining.com/). This material is potentially useful
for the development of teaching material as we've discussed in the
working group. The material received now (through Dropbox) us
"pre-release" stuff, but I'll try upload some of it into Google Drive soon.
Cheers,
Joona

Dear Joona,
Just to let you know that I have uploaded the files to Dropbox and
shared the folder with you - it should be showing up as
"OSTI-OriginalSlides". The main version of the slides are in .pptx
format: if you have any problems with these, let me know and I can
recast them as .odp files (I'll be providing both formats in the
official release). I know some of the formatting can go awry during the
transition between machines, so I've also provided PDF versions to give
some idea of the original look of the slides.
Just a couple of things I should mention:
* Some of the movie links were playing up last night, so the version
I've sent to you does not include embedded movie players. I've
provided YouTube links on the relevant pages, which should enable
you to look up the movies yourself and embed them as required;
* You'll also notice that some of the images from the talk are
missing. This is because I'm currently awaiting communication from a
couple of sources to acknowledge permission to release the images as
part of the CC-BY package that makes up OSTI. Under the
circumstances, I've had to omit these images until such time as I
have the official OK;
I'm really excited to hear about the Open Knowledge Roadshow - it sounds
like a fantastic initiative and I would love to hear how it progresses.
Very happy to promote it via my blog if you like! I was in Helsinki this
time last year for OKFest and had a tremendous time: it was one of the
best conferences I've ever attended. If your working group has a regular
blog or website, I'd be very interested in taking a look.
I'm also keen to keep track of the different places my OSTI materials
get used - for no other reason than wanting to see /where /and /how/
they've been useful, and so I can observe the different incarnations of
the course components. If you could let me know how you get on (for
example if your versions of these materials end up in the Roadshow,
etc.) that would be utterly fantastic! Furthermore, I would also be very
happy for you to create a "fork" from the main GitHub OSTI repo once the
official release is up (indeed would positively encourage it): I'm keen
to grow the project over time and provide others with a range of
versions of the course. If you end up with a Finnish-language version
that would be particularly handy.
Similarly, any feedback on the pros and cons of the OSTI materials from
your own experience would be gratefully received. Current goals on the
to-do list include language translations of the materials;
print-friendly versions on a white background; and text files of the
main information to aid derivative works.
Very best of luck with the course next week and if there's anything else
I can do to help, please let me know!
Warmest regards,
Sophie

Dear Sophie,
Thanks for the swift response.
Great to hear from you, and many thanks for getting in touch! I'm
really interested to hear about the work you're doing in Helsinki
and would be very happy to send you the pre-release slides
which you
saw in the YouTube videos of the OSTI course.
Great, thanks again! The idea for getting organized started from last
year's OKFest held here in Helsinki, and it turned out that quite a few
people from within and outside academia were interested in matters
related to open science. So far we've managed to get somewhat organized
(i.e. the working group) and are now moving into more concrete phase of
doing things. As said, we're aiming at developing teaching material for
anyone interested in open science to use as well as just providing a
community for the like-minded.
One big thing happening here - and indeed not only in Helsinki - is
Open
Knowledge Road Show 2013 [1] organized again the Open Knowledge
Finland.
The roadshow basically takes a motley crew of open X enthusiasts to
various Finnish cities in order to build networks and make open
knowledge known. Open science working group is participating as well -
at least in cities hosting universities - and we'll probably be using
the same teaching material there.
They're all licensed CC-BY, so you would be very welcome to
edit and
reuse them in your upcoming teaching & lecturing - indeed that's
what
the OSTI materials are there for!
Indeed, and I think nothing suits an presentation on open science
better
than demonstrating the benefits of sharing by using shared material.
Thank you
There is also no need to reinvent the wheel when such a fantastic
resource exists.
I will just add the brief caveat that the versions I'll be sending
you will be non-revised ones, so some small updates may be required
here and there.
No worries, I'm going the restructure the content anyways, as I only
have one 45 min slot for the introduction. The structure and content of
your 1st lecture is very good, but I'll probably try to squeeze in few
things from the other lectures as well.
You'll have noticed from the current state of the OSTI repo on
GitHub that the "official" version of the materials is currently
undergoing a curation & editing process before the full release.
Sorry that those official slides weren't quite ready and
waiting for
you at the point when you found our repository!
No need for apologies, I understand completely that it takes a little
time to finish things up.
Admittedly the files are fairly big, so email isn't the best way to
get them to you. However, I don't want to put them into the main
GitHub repo while the editing & curation process is going on -
either I could form a temporary GH repo which would be available
until you've received the materials, or I could share them with you
over Dropbox if you use that at all?
If you could let me know which of those options would work best for
you, I'm sure we can sort something out and get the slides to
you in
the next 24 hours. And in the meantime, all the best with lecture
prep!
Both option work well for me. I'm jlehtoma in GH and you can find
through joona.lehtomaki at gmail.com <mailto:joona.lehtomaki at gmail.com>
in Dropbox.
With kind regards,
Joona
