I'm definitely in favour, I've attended the last two ESOFs and thought they
were really good. They attract a cross-disciplinary crowd with
representatives from sci comm/publishing/policy/industry etc as well as
researchers. There's usually a lot of early career scientists in particular
because they give a big discount to people under 35. Peter Murray Rust spoke
in 2008 in Barcelona on the topic of open data in science (abstract from
session posted at the end of this email, although it is ridiculously broad!)
Perhaps we could take a look at some exciting things that are being
done/could be done with open data (rather than a general 'why is open good'
discussion), and then examine why it isn't all happening yet. Maybe we could
make this a discussion with the audience as to why they might/might not
consider publishing their data openly? Entirely different suggestions and
further thoughts welcome!
Jenny
