We hope to see many of you at the Science Museum tonight! The Citizen
Cyberlab has some really cool demos that we'll be showing on the 3rd floor
by the Launchpad, so do come by and see us:
Welcome to Hands-on Citizen Science at the Science Museum LATES!
Have you ever wished you could make a difference when you hear about
earthquakes or flooding happening on the other side of the world? Do you
want to create a new organism by engineering DNA? Maybe do some hardware
hacking with Inupiat hunter-gatherers in the Arctic Circle? Then YOU could
become a Citizen Scientist. Come join us on *the third floor in the Cafe
area
<http://citizencyberlab.eu/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Hands-on-Citizen-Science-Map1.png>
*alongside
the Launchpad to *Evolve, Make a Difference, Learn & Hack*!

Hands-on Citizen Science
<http://citizencyberlab.eu/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/hack_1.jpg>Citizen
Science is science that anybody can get involved in – gathering field data,
analysing & identifying data, playing problem-solving games, ‘hacking’
together sensor devices to measure and impact your own direct environment,
and even creating and running your own experiments.
Citizen Science can be done out in the field with a mobile phone, with
others and a bunch of hackable hardware and sensors, or from the comfort of
your home computer.
*Give it a try at the Science Museum LATES!*
EVOLVE! Be a superbug in the Hero.Coli game
Hero.coli <http://herocoli.com/> is an adventure game which lets you
explore a living world, and collect and combine functional DNA fragments in
order to engineer and control the abilities of a bacterium and face
obstacles and dangers. Join the quest of a nano-robot and its bacterium
companion Cellia to ensure the balance and prosperity of their living world.
*Start your journey now. <http://herocoli.com/lates>*
Show us your mastery of synthetic biology by finishing the game in record
time, and give us some ideas about how to make the game even better! *Find
out more.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Use Geotag-X to help UNITAR map disasters
Geotag-X <http://www.geotagx.org/> is UNITAR’s web platform to enable
anyone around the world to assist their disaster response efforts by
helping to analyse the massive amounts of data that are produced during a
crisis, which is an overwhelmingly difficult task for a small team, but
easy to share across a large number of volunteers. The GeoTag-X plugin
allows you to help collect photos that are relevant to the disaster and add
them to the pool of photos online.
Challenge 1: Yamuna Monsoon Flooding
The river Yamuna is the lifeline of Delhi’s water supply, but it is dying
from industrial pollution and untreated sewage. It is one of the most
polluted rivers in the world. Citizen-generated images can document the
gravity of the river pollution, its multiple adverse effects on communities
and the urgency for environmental restoration of the river.
*Help us to tag photos of the flooding
<http://www.geotagx.org/app/category/yamuna-womenforsustainablecities/> *shared
with us by Citizens, that can be used together with satellite-generated
images to understand where people are affected by toxic flood water, and
aid flood relief and rescue operations.
Challenge 2: Yemeni Water Usage
UNOSAT is assisting the NGO ACTED in mapping agricultural areas of the
Raymah division of Yemen that have been hit by drought. Much of this work
is done with satellite imagery but UNOSAT is seeking photographs or videos
depicting agricultural areas and practices in or near the Raymah division
of Yemen. This will help ACTED to improve water usage in times of drought.
Download the Firefox Plugin, and *help us Find
Photos*<http://www.geotagx.org/app/category/yemeniagriculturalwaterassessment/>
.
LEARN! Are you a Citizen Scientist
Do you enjoy doing science? Do you like to explore the world around you?
Have you ever tried a Citizen Science project like Galaxy Zoo or Foldit!?
We’d like to hear what you think! Please take 1 minute to answer a few
questions, and watch the answers all add up on our display on the 3rd
floor….
*Take the survey. <http://tinyurl.com/p564k3j>*
HACK! Help us hack arctic climate change.
On the shores of the Arctic ocean, climate change is impacting the way that
subsistence communities hunt for food. Rapidly decreasing ice cover makes
hunting perilous and up-to-the-minute information about ice thickness is
becoming a matter of life or death.
We are working with the Yupik and Iñupiat to develop DIY science techniques
which will help their hunters to identify these changes and share their
knowledge quickly, using mobile and sensor technologies. Our hope is that
the technology they develop will make a difference both to their
communities and to our understanding of the effects of climate change.
At our workshop, we will introduce you to some of the same basic methods
for DIY science hacking that we’ll be using in Alaska. We’ll wire up a few
arduino boards with sensors and show you how to share the information they
generate. And we’ll have a few non-science hacks to play with, too.
We’ll introduce you to ScienceMakers <http://www.sciencemakers.net/>, a new
initiative to enable global hacking for science in schools and local
communities — and we’ll be signing people up to help out with our Alaska
project via the web.
We’ll also be showing a movie about our work in Alaska and the communities
we work with. So even if you aren’t interested in hacking, and just want to
find out about our project, there’ll be plenty for you do.
If you’d like to find out more about the project, please visit our project
page<https://www.ucl.ac.uk/excites/projects/excites-projects/arctic-hunters/climate-change>
