Thanks Paweł, this will indeed help. In the meantime I scraped some data
from the DOAJ web site and got the following
total pubs: 1794672
total world pop: 7130 (all pop numbers in millions and from Wolfram Alpha)
pubs from US, UK, Australia, NZ and W Europe: 783131 (44%)
pop US, UK, Australia, NZ and W Europe: 951 (13%)
pubs from BRICS: 476873 (27%)
pop BRICS: 3045.2 (43%)
pubs from other: 534668 (30%)
pop other: 3134 (44%)
