Hi Jenny,

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I'll see if I can join online - might involve some (very much non-open) technology too keep the young generation at my home occupied ;-)

kind regards,
Bianca

Subject: [open-science] Open technologies seminar/reading group

Hi All

I thought this research seminar group that I'm co-convening at the University of Cambridge might be of interest to members of the list.

We have a seminar coming up this Wednesday 14 March (14:00-16:00 UTC) on assessing the impact of open IP in emerging technologies with an introduction to work being undertaken by Richard Gold and colleagues as part of the Montreal Neurological Institute's open science experiment as described in these recent papers:
Gold, E. R. (2016). Accelerating translational research through open science: The neuro experiment.<http://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.2001259> PLoS biology, 14(12), e2001259
Ali-Khan, S. E., Jean, A., MacDonald, E., & Gold, E. R. (2018). Defining Success in Open Science<https://mniopenresearch.org/articles/2-2>. MNI Open Research, 2.

We'll compare efforts in open science to work by the World Wide Web Foundation and many others in assessing the impact of open government data.
You can join online here: https://cam.ad<https://cam.ad/>obeconnect.com/open-ip-research<http://obeconnect.com/open-ip-research> (sorry, requires Flash - University procurement decision).

Open Intellectual Property Models of Emerging Technologies: CRASSH Faculty Research Group

We are interested in open technologies situated along a spectrum from fully public domain to forming part of a managed commons in emerging areas such as synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and electric cars; new networked infrastructure such as distributed energy and new forms of manufacturing such as 3D-printing. We explore the legal issues, economic implications and governance of open technologies across key sectors, asking how they are established, what motivates the IP owners and ultimately what impact this might have on societies. A guiding question of our research group is to what extent open technologies result in equitable sharing of knowledge. All are welcome to join our meetings, forum<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/open-ip> and shared reading list<https://www.zotero.org/groups/2130437/open_intellectual_property_models_of_emerging_technologies/items>.

If Open IP in emerging technologies does present an opportunity to create a more equitable society - how would one assess the impact and the extent of the role openness played? This session will build on the earlier sessions of the term to create at a framework for the impacts of Open IP and discuss the theory development and empirical work required to enable effective assessment.
