[open-sustainability] Data on energy subsidies?

Hey Jonathan

  * REEEP have been thinking about oil industry subsidies and probably have some good data. In the OKFestival sustainability stream Green Hackathon last year, Denise Recheis from REEEP presented a challenge around oil facts. I don't think it ended up being built, and the link to the challenge is now broken. (Details below). They have country energy profiles.
  * Of course there's Open Oil, who Zara worked for https://twitter.com/zararah/status/359701166541639680

There's lots to open up: subsidies on production (e.g. UK North Sea oil exploration, Spanish coal mining subsidies), and consumption (e.g. potential UK subsidy of coal power plants, or consumer fuel subsidies in Iran, Nigeria, Venezuela).

Energy Pulse and Big Oil Facts

Thomas Thurner and Denise Recheis presented two challenges relating to energy data: Energy Pulse and Big Oil Facts/Truth. Energy pulse focusses on varying production and consumption patterns of electricity around the globe, to visualise how they can be held in balance as demand increases and more time-varying supplies of renewable energy are introduced. Big Oil Facts is about visualising the subsidies given to fossil fuel production companies and how this underpins their profits – a reality often overlooked in criticisms of renewable energy subsidy.

Saw this story yesterday about coal power subsidies [1], which reminded me to ask whether anyone has looked into data on energy subsidies in their country?

Perhaps this could be an interesting data expedition, or mini-project?
