[OpenSpending] Representing things in terms of other things?

This recent story made me wonder whether we could do something for Open
Spending (or even a separate little thing, related to OpenSpending) to show
big spending items in terms of other smaller or similar spending items?
This is a nice, simple example of something along the lines I'm thinking
of, for comparing carbon footprints between very different types of things
(e.g. 30 apples is equivalent to 67km by train):
Also reminds me of Michael Blastland's piece a few years ago on how to
express big numbers in terms of small numbers and proportions .
