Hello list,

I have written this email as an update/introduction in advance of the meeting a group of us are going to have at the end of this week in Berlin. It describes the research on our side of making public domain calculation possible on a large scale.

As you know this project is being mainly carried by the Institute of Information Law, IViR (1) in Amsterdam and Knowledgeland, KL(2) also in Amsterdam.

The IViR researches copyright law in Europe and makes these insightful for public domain calculation through a series of flowcharts. See (3) for earlier versions of these.
KL transforms these flowcharts into a format that helps users to quickly gain insight into these matters through webtools (calculators). See (4) for an earlier version of this.

Earlier post have described that general format, XML based, of the data of our calculators. These partially made automatic public domain calculation possible.
See also (5) and (6) for more details on that format

We've now developed a tool that help makes these data files. These would force the people who encode the IViR flowchart in a precise structure, which makes mistakes far less likely.
This tool also indexes the metadata needed to answer a specific flowchart (on a per jurisdiction basis) and store them in an independant XML based file. See (7) for the architecture

We've further refined our calculator software to be able to handle these second meta data XML files to not only provide a a tool that assist walking through the flowchart but could, based on a form, also completely automatically answer the flowchart.

Also, Christina and I have written a small 2 pager describing how automatic calculation over multiple european jurisdiction provides us with some big challenges. Not only semantically but also ontologically (8).

See you in Berlin!

Regards,

Maarten Zeinstra
