[pd-discuss] Making a short video on "How to openly publish public domain works"

I've had a look at this, and suggest that before we proceed any
further we take a bit of a step back and review what we're doing in
light of recent developments.

In my mind this will be part of a broader initiative, led by a loose
coalition of key stakeholders in this space. I recently posted about
this on the OKF blog [1].

There are two key bits to the puzzle:

  1. Opening up digital copies of public domain works
  2. Opening up information (metadata) about public domain works

I think we should produce a short video about both of these things,
and run a relatively high profile campaign, aimed at GLAM
institutions. I've spoken to the following, who say they are
interested:

  * Brewster Kahle from the Internet Archive
  * Various people from the Communia Association
  * Various people from Wikimedia
  * Folks from Creative Commons (Mike and Diane have expressed an
interest in being involved in this thread)

I've also spoken to Nina Paley, who says she would be up for helping
us to produce short animations. We'll need to see if we can raise
funds for this between us. Perhaps we could start a Kickstarter
campaign or similar, seeded with funding from CC, IA, OKF, WMF and
others?

The script is really important, and should (in my mind):

  * Break down the key issues for a non-specialist (hence minimal legalese)
  * Leave viewers with several actionable things they can take away
  * Be sufficiently well-versed with the issues that they make a
convincing case for GLAM institutions, without seeming naive / or
idealistic - e.g. giving examples from high profile institutions,
giving a sense of how these things fit with public mission
  * Be simple, clear and exciting enough to be run as a TV commercial
- something that people would *want* to screen and show off
  * Have some catchy or interesting angle or metaphor - to help it go
viral, or at least to be more than a boring instructional video

Given these things, I think this will need serious thought and input
from all of us.

Mike: do you think the CC Summit in Warsaw could be a good place to
sit down and discuss this further? E.g. could we have a satellite
event there to bash out a plan and work on this together? If so we
should make sure we have invited key stakeholders ASAP!

All the best,

Jonathan
