FYI: education programme for OPEN INNOVATION and OPEN SCIENCE

USING GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE – MAKING IT AVAILABLE TO THE WORLD

Knowledge is spreading ever faster; it is subject to permanent change
and often ends up in unexpected places. The Lab for Open Innovation in
Science, LOIS, is the first education programme in which scientists can
learn how to apply Open Innovation methods and principles along the
entire process of generating and disseminating new scientific knowledge.
The LOIS curriculum comprises 13 individual training modules within a
12-month period. It is complemented by a kick-off and a closing module.

WHAT DOES LOIS STAND FOR?
The acronym LOIS stands for Lab for Open Innovation in Science.

WHAT IS LOIS?
LOIS is a one-year training program with lab character for scientists:

In different education and training modules, scientists learn and train
the application of open innovation principles and methods in generating
and disseminating new research findings.
Lecturers, trainers and coaches are leading international open
innovation experts.
Practical application is a significant component of LOIS. Starting
points are provided by participants, project partners, respectively CRIS.
Handling real world cases, interactivity, small groups and exchanging
experiences in lab meetings enable a high level of learning exchange and
makes theoretical input tangible straight away.
Access to international good practices in the field of open innovation,
as well as open innovation networks, will be available to the
participating scientists.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF LOIS?

Scientists learn and train the usage of open innovation problem-solving
methods and strategies to increase output and the relevance of their own
scientific work. In the long term, LOIS should contribute to making open
innovation principles an essential component in scientific processes, to
bring science and society closer to one another, thereby increasing the
positive effect of science on society.

The initial implementation of LOIS is a pilot project with an
experimental character. Its results will help to conceptualise a similar
long-term, sustainable programme for science.

WHAT SPECIFIC CONTENT CAN BE ACQUIRED BY PARTICIPATING IN LOIS?

Generally, participating scientists learn how they can enhance their
problem-solving competences by using open innovation methods and
principles in fields such as data analysis, establishing new / unusual
partnerships, disseminating research results, etc. The following themes
will be addressed in the education and training modules:

Where can one find relevant knowledge that may contribute to the
development of new and more relevant research questions, hypotheses and
to generating new research results?
How can one identify these, perhaps even currently unknown, sources of
knowledge and integrate them into the inherent research process?
How can findings of the own research institution / group be made
available for others in a win-win situation – for society, for
institutions or businesses?
Which factors influence a successful application of open innovation
methods and principles in the process of developing and disseminating
new research projects?

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN LOIS?

The Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft addresses scientists at postdoctoral
level, and above, to participate in LOIS. Researchers in the early
phases of their careers (completion of PhD no longer than 10 years ago)
are particularly encouraged to apply for LOIS. Experience of group work
is required at both national and international level.

Participants should be

Scientists working in Austria (independent of nationality) respectively.
Austrian scientists working abroad
whose focus is on Health Sciences

HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS CAN GRADUATE FROM LOIS?

Currently, maximum participation in LOIS is limited to 20 scientists per
year.

IS PARTICIPATION IN LOIS TIED TO A SPECIALIZED FIELD?

LOIS' focus is on Health Sciences.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO PARTICIPANTS HAVE TO FULFIL?

Completed PhD degree
Active occupation in an Austrian research facility (independent of
nationality)
Active occupation in an international research facility (Austrian
nationality)
Experience with group work (international and national)
Interest in theme and motivation, ready to contribute actively in LOIS.

WHERE WILL LOIS TAKE PLACE?

In Vienna.

WHAT IS THE LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION AT LOIS?

The language of instruction is English.

WHAT SKILLS DOES LOIS COMMUNICATE?

How to attain access to new knowledge and new resources as, for example,
new partners, new methods of generating data, respectively, analysing
data, etc.
How to augment efficacy of research processes and research services
How to efficiently transfer research results to society.
