Betreff: [OpenCon] The results are in! Explore over 20,000 responses to the global survey on Innovations in Scholarly Communication

Dear all,

How cool would it be if you could analyze the current global state of scholarly communication and research practices not only by what people say, but by their active use of certain platforms, tools and websites? Well … now you can!

Many new websites and online tools have come into existence to support scholarly communication in all phases of the research workflow. To what extent researchers are using these and more traditional tools has been largely unknown. Our 2015-2016 survey on research tool usage<http://101innovations.wordpress.com> aimed to fill that gap.

The results can provide insights into current practices across various fields, research roles, countries and career stages. The results may help decision making by stakeholders supporting researchers and may help researchers wishing to reflect on their own online workflows. The data also makes it possible to correlate research tool usage to stance on Open Access and Open Science, and contains over 10,000 free-text answers on what respondents consider the most important developments in scholarly communication.

The full raw and cleaned dataset<http://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.49583> of the survey (20,663 responses from >150 countries) is available on Zenodo [link], with a Data Note on F1000Research<http://dx.doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.8414.1> explaining methodology. For quick exploration of the survey results, we also made an interactive dashboard on the Silk platform<http://dashboard101innovations.silk.co/> (http://dashboard101innovations.silk.co/). Here, you can view all results as charts, and easily filter on discipline, research role, country and career stage. You can even create your own charts to drill down into the results and link answers to different questions together (e.g. “What tools do people who use FigShare to share data use to assess impact?”)

All data are available under a CC-0 license, and we encourage anyone to use and build upon them. We’d love to see your analyses, so please consider sharing them in turn!

Please contact us with any comments, ideas and concerns you might have.

kind regards,
