Hallo allerseits,

Julia

Fuzz,

I tend to get a little excited about these things, but some recent news about two civic hacking projects in Philly has got me really jazzed.

GreenSTEM Network is a project to create DIY soil sensors - it started at a local hackathon and was developed over a number of months at the weekly Code for Philly hack nights.

CyclePhilly is a project to capture bicycle rider data with the goal of using it to inform future planning decisions. Another project that got started at Code for Philly.

What's really interesting is that both have active participation from government. One of the team members on GreenSTEM works at the Philly Water Department, and the Philly School District is on board to bring it into some local schools. CyclePhilly got contacted by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission after one of the Code for Philly Meetups, and they are now behind it.

Really cool to see folks from government actively participating and supporting these civic hacking projects. And major, major props to the work of the Philly Brigade - and all the other brigades. Their hard work is paying of with real change.

Cool stuff happening.

Mark
