CALL FOR PAPERS
International Journal on Digital Libraries
Special Issue on Research Data Publishing

Data publishing is a practice where data are made public so that they can
be reused by others, in accordance with associated policies, while
guaranteeing that data provenance and attribution are tracked. There is not
yet a general agreement on the importance of, and on the solutions for,
data publishing. While in some communities it has already solidified into
codified policies, procedures and workflows, in others its motivations and
realization shapes are still controversial.

The further development of data publishing requires a critical and in-depth
analysis of the approaches so far developed by the different communities in
order to identify the aspects actually facilitating data publishing, to
distill best practices and promote solutions that enable effective
cross-domain reuse of published data.

Data publishing is a multifaceted process that can occur at different
stages of the scientific process, involves different level of openness and
controlled sharing, and concerns data products at various level of
manipulation and maturity. At the light of this wide range of possibilities
the data publishing process has to be analysed also from the new
perspectives open up by the availability of innovative technologies to
understand if, and to what extent, it can/should be rethought.

The proposed special issue aims at discussing data publishing practices,
requirements and supporting solutions from the digital library perspective.
Specifically, it intends to examine and highlight the contribution that the
digital library research and practitioner community can offer to promote
appropriate and systematic data publishing practices improving scientific
communication and enabling validation and reuse by both domain experts and
“interested amateurs”.

In particular, it solicits high quality papers on data publishing practices
and experiences including, but certainly not limited to:
- Data publishing concept, e.g. is all kind of data worth publishing?
- Data documentation approaches (including metadata) aiming at facilitating
discovery, access, traceability, trust, cross domain sharing and reuse;
- Data publishing strategies and workflows;
- Data validation and quality assessment practices;
- Data identification, citation and reference approaches;
- Infrastructures, repositories and services for data
publication/publishing;
- Data object models, formats and standards for publication/publishing and
sharing;
- Practices for data attribution, authorship, legitimacy;
- Data papers and data journals;
- Approaches promoting long-term availability of published data;
- Business models for data publishing, incentives and costs;
- Skills and roles for supporting data publishing;
- Data policies, licences and formats impacting on published data
exploitation and reuse;
- Data and publication linking approaches;
- Data contextualisation, i.e. providing published data with any additional
material contributing to data reuse including, beyond publications, blogs,
web pages, workflows, experiment descriptions, software.
