[ckan-dev] error installing any CKAN extension

I have been trying to install the CKAN spatial extension. I cannot get past the pip install - I receive the error OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/lib/ckan/default/build'

I am installing within the python vir env
I am using the package CKAN install with Ubunto 12.04
I have the DataStore, FileStore and Data Viewer Extensions installed.
